Year 1 & 2 (Ash)

~ Spring Term ~

What are we doing this term in year 1 and year R?

The children are happy to be back in school after the Christmas break. There is lots planned for this term. The year R children spend lots of time in Oak class so that they can access the reception environment. It always lovely to have them back in class for story time and especially golden time!

In English we have just begun to learn how to write a quest tale. We will be going on a bear hunt and will be changing our ideas to suit our favourite creature. Our non-fiction unit will be a newspaper report about a bear being hunted down. As always we are trying to make our handwriting as neat as possible when writing in the cursive script.

In Maths we are firstly learning about time. We are learning how to tell the time to o'clock and half past and writing the hands on the clock to show these times. We will also be practising our adding up and taking away skills and becoming more confident with this. We enjoy singing and exercising to our number song every day and seeing how far we can count with Blossom the bear.

In Science we are learning about materials. We will be going on a materials hunt around the school and will be finding out why things are made of different materials.

Our summer term topic is 'Weather Experts'.

In RE we are thinking about how some places are special with a specific focus on Harvest. We are looking forward to going to the church for our Harvest festival. We will be thinking about special places to us and special places to other people.

We are doing gymnastics in PE and absolutely LOVE getting the mats out in the hall. Premier sports come in a teach once a week and Miss Budd teaches the other lesson of PE.

We are excited to have a new singing teacher, Miss Todd to teach once a week. The children enjoy using a variety of instruments in their learning.

Reading and phonics are a big focus for us in year one. We log who reads at home every day and those who do read at home will be entered into the reading raffle at the end of the week and one lucky reader will win a special prize. We always celebrate the children who read their book at home.

As always, if you have any questions please do come and see me,

Mrs Clapp.
