When you have been into class, you may have seen some sheets of paper hanging on washing lines across the classroom. Covering these sheets of paper are strange hieroglyphics. Are we teaching the children a secret code? No – we are using a method called Talk for Writing – the key to raising attainment.
Talk for Writing, developed by Pie Corbett, is powerful tool because it is based on the principles of how children learn.
Talk for Writing enables children to imitate the key language they need for a particular topic orally before they try reading and analysing it. Through fun activities that help them rehearse the tune of the language they need, followed by shared writing to show them how to craft their writing, children are helped to write in the same style.
Schools that have adopted the approach have not only increased their children’s progress but have found that children and teachers alike love it.
AUTUMN TERM TEXTS
Sparky the Fire Dog - Fiction - Rescue Story
Pepys Diary - Non Fiction - Recount
The Fire Bird - Fiction - Quest Story
The Great Fire - Non Fiction - Information Text
Each time the class start a new text, I will put that text on-line. Please spend time reading the text with your child. Encourage them to tell you the story using the actions we have learnt and ask questions about the text. The quicker your child becomes familiar with the text the more confident they will be to write independently. This will of course, increase progress dramatically.
